Any time the American Heart Association publishes new guidelines about how to live a longer, healthier life, I sit up and take notice. Admittedly, it hasn’t always been that way. I will freely admit that I didn’t take my health as seriously as I should have. I justified a lot of things away. “I still look pretty good” I would say to myself, looking at myself in the mirror, knowing full well I didn’t. Of course, it was a slow change. I got heavier over a long period and that led to less exercise. More stress piled on top of that. And we all know where this story went. Most of these things are common sense. But they are good reminders anyway. 1. Know your risk. Smoking, kidney disease or a family history of early heart disease can increase your risk. 2. Eat a healthy diet. Eat vegetables
